Mary Hutchinson Womens Prison (M.H.W.P.) bird count July 14th to October 13th, 2023

During my 3 month government-paid retreat, I made a note of the birds that I saw and heard in and around the prison. The following is the list I made.


I did not have the pleasure of seeing any of these though:

Predictably - a lot of these birds are introduced - but it was fun to observe and hear their choruses from prison.

  • Starling, Sturnus vulgaris

  • Sparrow, Passer domesticus

  • White cockatoo, Cacatua galerita

  • Masked lapwing, Vanellus miles

  • Native hen, Tribonyx mortierii

  • Wedge-tailed eagle, Aquila audax fleayi

  • Superb fairy wren, Malurus cyaneus

  • Raven, Corvus tasmanicus

  • Noisy miner, Manorina melanocephala

  • Eastern rosella, Platycercus eximius

  • Green rosella, Platycercus caledonicus

  • Australian wood duck, Chenonetta jubata

  • Magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen

  • Pacific gull, Larus pacificus

  • Silver gull, Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae

  • Crescent honeyeater (heard not seen), Phylidonyris pyrrhopterus

  • Welcome swallow, Hirundo neoxena

  • Grey currawong, Strepera versicolor

  • Swamp harrier, Circus approximans

  • Rainbow lorikeet, Trichoglossus moluccanus

  • Blue-winged parrot, Neophema chrysostoma
